Detroit — Tigers catcher Alex Avila doesn't even want to guess how many All-Star Game votes he's received from fans.

Avila claims he would rather stay in suspense until the final tally is announced noon Sunday on TBS for the July 12 game in Phoenix.

"I really have no idea what's going on," he said. "If I go, someone will let me know. If I'm not going, someone will let me know that, too."

Avila's calm, low-key approach to the matter doesn't mean he doesn't appreciate the effort fans made to make him at least part of the All-Star conversation.

For Alex Smith, greatness was expected. He was the first player selected in the draft in 2005 by the San Francisco 49ers, a franchise that produced Hall of Fame quarterbacks Steve Young and Joe Montana.

So far, his career has fallen far short of those lofty expectations. The team has a playoff drought dating back to 2002, tied for fourth longest in the league and Smith, currently a free agent, was considered to be on the bubble as to whether he’d be re-signed for next season.
