A death with no answers
A year ago today, Kirkham lost his pro debut — a 41-second fight in Aiken that would take his life.
His death is considered the second in a U.S.-sanctioned MMA bout. It came soon after the first anniversary of the sport — which combines boxing, wrestling and karate-style fighting — being allowed in South Carolina.
The death led state regulators to more closely scrutinize matchups, but otherwise little has changed, promoters and organizers say.
The S.C. Athletic Commission has not released its investigation into Kirkham’s death and would not comment about how it oversees the popular but relatively new sport. Promoters, a former S.C. athletic commissioner and the head of the sanctioning body that works with state regulators said all they believe the bout that killed Kirkham was run properly and according to state rules.
