Nobody knows exactly why the birds chose Bomb Island, also known as Doolittle Island. It probably has something to do with an abundant food supply (bugs) in the Midlands and the lack of natural predators such as raccoons on the island, which has been designated a bird sanctuary.

Watching a sunset or sunrise from a mountain top generally means camping near that peak. But for the intrepid, the rangers at Table Rock State Park lead occasional sunrise hikes to the top of the most famous mountain in the state.

Hikers wear headlamps or carry flashlights on the steep hike on the well-marked trail to the top. You arrive in time to catch your breath before the sunrise takes it away again. Phil Gaines, director of state parks, tagged along on one of those hikes and was amazed.

It's officially Summertime. There's always time when we're on Summertime. It's like a magical time zone where days are long and nights are cool. Where sunsets are made of cotton candy clouds and violet watercolour skies. Where the grass is green and the flowers greet you with a smile. Where the popsicles are always cold and the the sun is always hot.

The sun wakes up at 5am and doesn't go to sleep until 11pm. You can stay in bed til noon and still have enough time in the day to get everything done. People mow their lawns at 11pm and go grocery shopping at 7:30am.
